FOCUS talks to Guy Nockels of Namib Film

With FOCUS 2017 just under two months away, Guy Nockels, Head of Namib Film details his plans for the event.

Guy, you attended both FOCUS 2015 and 2016. What brings you back this year?

As FOCUS provides a solid platform to meet new clients and the availability of “one on one” with producers, directors, production managers and location scouts, it is the perfect opportunity to show what Namibia has to offer.

What in particular will you be promoting at FOCUS 2017?

Our locations in Namibia, particularly the safe and film-friendly desert locations that are only minutes away from a town with all the necessities required by a visiting producer, as well as African landscapes and wildlife for natural history productions.

What was the most commonly asked question from producers at FOCUS last year about Namibia as a filming destination?

Is it safe to film in Namibia? To which we say: absolutely! We have the safest and easiest desert location to film in.

I understand Hunan Satellite TV, the second largest Chinese broadcaster was using your production services in Namibia this year. Can you tell us about that shoot?

It was a great experience working with Hunan and logistically challenging. The production was on a worldwide trip starting in China, then to Brazil, Namibia and Australia before heading home. With a crew and cast of over 100 people arriving at different times and from different places, they wanted to shoot at various locations across Namibia. This put our skills to the test and by all accounts we came out on top. Hunan chose two locations that were miles apart, but also wanted to film while traveling between the various locations. This request took us on national roads and down a mountain pass with a tracking vehicle rigged with a crane and ended up with a night shoot at Sossusvlei, one of Namibia’s most popular locations. It all went off without a hitch and Hunan were very happy with their brief visit to Namibia.

In a sentence, how would you describe FOCUS to a producer thinking of attending FOCUS this year for the first time?

The best place to meet people from the locations industry.

How do you like the FOCUS venue, exhibition layout, organisation and facilities?

It’s one of our favourites. We have been to many production events across the world and FOCUS is truly brilliant.

Many thanks Guy. Looking forward to seeing you and the Namib Film team at FOCUS 2017 on the 5th & 6th of December.
