Build Space, Business Rates and Better Training (Exhibitor Presentation)

How a Location Agency makes London more Film Friendly in 2019

Location Collective, one of London’s leading film location agencies, has recently set up an Advisory Board of Location Managers and Line Producers. The aim is to raise and debate the biggest challenges facing the industry and discuss how we can help tackle those issues.
This presentation, hosted by Antony Iredale (MD of Location Collective), will focus on three key topics recently discussed by our Advisory Board:

1) Dummies’ Guide to Business Rates and Filming
Business rates payable by owners, which can be triggered by accommodating filming, are increasingly an issue when it comes to getting into London buildings.
Charlie Hill (of Business Rates advisors Turner Morum) has been working with Location Collective to help navigate business rates implications for buildings we represent.
Charlie will give an introduction to business rates and the challenges they present for building owners, offering up rules, tips and hacks to help survive this tricky topic.

2) Nurturing the Next Generation of Location Managers
One of the topics frequently raised by our Advisory Board has been the shortage of crew created by the rapid growth of the film industry in the UK, with specific focus on ensuring up and coming Location Managers have access to the same training and development opportunities as previous generations. Harriet Lawrence (Supervising Location Manager) previously ran a hugely successful Assistant Location Managers’ training course, with many alumni now at the top of their game in Location Management. Location Collective have recently been supporting Harriet in getting this course back up and running. Harriet will talk about the course, why it has been so beneficial to the industry, and how to get involved – either as a course participant or a supporter.

3) Chasing Space: Creating Alternative Studios
We asked about the biggest challenge facing the film industry right now and the answer was unanimous. Space. Or rather, the lack of it. This short talk will shed light on some of the challenges facing productions who are scouting for set build space in the current London landscape. We’ll discuss some of the ways in which productions are getting around the challenges, the pros and cons of different solutions, and talk about how Location Collective are working
