Gareth Wildman

Production Engineering Manager, BBC

Gareth is one of two Production Engineering Managers working full time for the BBC and responsible for all of the Outside Broadcasts that don’t involve a ball (BBC Sport have their own team of EM’s.)
Gareth is there to bridge the gap between editorial ambition and technical feasibility, coordinating resources, crew & technology for Outside Broadcast & other location-based operations and is there to assist from initial planning to on site delivery of programmes, both live and pre-recorded.
Gareth works with all BBC departments, to offer advice, experience and specialist contacts for all aspects of OBs, from a simple ‘phone call to planning a full scale outside broadcast, he also offers a sympathetic shoulder to cry on when it’s all a bit too much…!
He works closely with procurement to ensure they are using approved & trusted suppliers, power, scaffolding, structures as well as OB facility providers and is charged with keeping up to date with the latest technology through contact with manufacturers & suppliers, making sure that the various departments aren’t inventing the wheel twice & that across the BBC everyone gets the benefit. He also has close ties with BBC Academy, universities & skillset to ensure appropriate training is available to those joining the industry.
Gareth has worked for the BBC for the last 4 ½ years. Prior to that he was Head of Engineering at Arena Television, and has also worked at NEP Visions, Formula One Management, Molinare Studios and VMTV where he began his television career as a runner in 1995.
