Julia joined the BFI in 2017 where she is responsible for running the Research and Statistics Unit
(RSU) as well as avariety of other BFI related research initiatives all designed to increase our
knowledge and understanding of the impact of film and other screen industries. This covers a very
wide brief from understanding their cultural and social impact and economic value as well as the
implications for employment and skills provision, business growth and innovation. Her remit also
covers the provision of intelligence on audience consumption and participation in the visual sector
and the effects that changing patterns of film and video consumption have on future strategy for the
industry. The RSU conducts and publishes a wide variety of reports, including the Statistical Yearbook (the ‘Bible of Film Information’) as well as studies on workforce diversity, the implications for the screen
sectors of leaving the EU and its latest report, Screen Business, the impact of the screen sector tax
reliefs on growth of the UK economy. Prior to working at the BFI, Julia spent 9 years with the global market research company, GfK where she lead the UK media industry team. She has also worked at the BBC and ITV in a variety of roles, and was part of the launch team for ITV2, when digital TV channels were the ‘next big thing’!
