The UK’s Space Race – the reality of attracting international production

This discussion will provide an accurate update on the current situation as well as the UK’s plans for the future and its ability to support an even larger increase in the volume of production.

Earlier this year the announcement by Netflix that they were taking a ten-year lease on Shepperton Studios followed by the news the Walt Disney Company were to take over most of the space and stages at Pinewood, created concerns about the shortage of studio space for independents and appear to mark the beginning of the so-called “Space race”.

Across the UK, there are currently many planning applications in the works, all designed to develop more studio space in order to lure and secure more production over the next few years.

But what about the short term? Is there enough space and support to maintain the high demand and the relationships with international producers? And what does it mean for smaller independents? What is the reality – does the Space Race actually exist?
